Features & Compatibility
Regardless of whether they are black, white, or green, all types of peppercorns are derived from the tropical vine belonging to the Piperaceae family. Although the plant is indigenous to India, the popularity of this spice has prompted its commercial growth throughout parts of Southeast Asia. Creamy white peppercorns are produced when the mature berries of the pepper vine are left to ferment naturally after being dried in the sun. Known for its sharp, pungent taste, pepper functions as a warming spice. It is recognised as one of the world’s most ancient and important spices, historically valued so highly that it was once used to pay taxes. During the 410 A.D. siege of Rome, the Huns even insisted on a ransom of 3,000 pounds of pepper. India remains a primary producer of pepper, notably offering premium varieties such as Tellichery Extra Bold and Malabar Garbled. The highest-quality Indian pepper is grown in the monsoon forests located on the Malabar coast in Kerala.
