Features & Compatibility
Gopaldhara Tea Estate, located in the Darjeeling region at an elevation between 5,500 and 7,000 feet, produces Darjeeling Purple Tea. Due to their superior quality, these tea leaves are predominantly processed by hand, with very little mechanical intervention. Expert workers, under the supervision of the estate manager, harvest only the leaves that display a clear purple color. The pluckers take great care to select only the highest-quality shoots, focusing specifically on those with pronounced purple buds and leaves. Because this tea remains unoxidised, it retains a high level of natural polyphenols and antioxidants, ranking it among the healthiest tea varieties.
Although it belongs to the Camellia sinensis family like all other teas, this specific variety originates from a unique mutation of an Assam cultivar. The plant requires intense sunlight to flourish, which results in increased production of polyphenols and anthocyanins. Unlike the standard green color seen in typical Camellia sinensis, the new growth on this plant is a vivid purple. This distinct hue is caused by a high density of anthocyanins-the same antioxidants that give fruits like raspberries and blueberries their deep colours. Known for their health-promoting properties, anthocyanins are particularly noted for their role in supporting cardiovascular health.
The antioxidants within these leaves are thought to provide anti-cancer benefits, support vision health, manage blood sugar, and reduce cholesterol. The tea offers a mild, sweet flavour rather than an intense one. While the dry leaves appear dark, they brew into a light infusion with a faint purple undertone. We noted that the flavour profile is similar to a strong white tea, lacking the bitterness or astringency often associated with green or black teas. Furthermore, squeezing a bit of lime into the tea turns the liquid a beautiful shade of pink.
